This short-lived band was basically ELP without the “L,” with Robert Berry (later of Alliance) taking the place of Greg Lake in the threesome when it comes to bass and lead vocals. The band played only borderline Prog-Rock, with the majority of the material being AOR in the same “borderline Prog-Rock” style as Asia. The band released only a single album before calling it quits.

At first blush, the band seems to be a clone of other acts such as Stratovarius, with a tendency toward Power Metal, including guitar/keyboard wankery and other such generally impressive devices. But in actuality, 4th Dimension is an extension of the genre. Not only does the band possess a worthwhile singer, but also an extraordinary keyboardist that dabbles in stellar soloing and background “pomp,” but also in setting moods/atmospheres appropriate for each track. Certainly, a fan of the Prog-Metal genre will discover references to Stratovarius and other acts such as Vision Divine, Symphony X, Royal Hunt, and even Rhapsody while listening to this band, but 4th Dimension has also developed a commendable style/sound all its own.

Upon first listen, this band had me sitting up and paying attention. The style occasionally brings to mind other high-quality bands of the Prog-Metal genre, such as Symphony X, Adagio, and Threshold, so fans of those bands will likely find much to entertain them on these two releases.
