About a decade ago, in my constant hunt for more Prog groups, I happened to stumble upon Norway’s Pagan’s Mind, hearing a track called “Through Osiris’ Eyes.” I ended up listening to the song numerous times, unable to get it out of my mind. With its impressive vocalist, the driving rhythms, crunchy guitars, and rich keyboard orchestrations, Pagan’s Mind reminded me of other groups I enjoyed in the same genre—Age Of Nemesis, Pyramaze, Andromeda, Dream Theater—so I eventually collected all five of the band’s studio albums.

A band I find (at times) brilliant and (at times) horrifically boring. The earlier releases are my favorites, each great slices of inspired Prog-Metal, but much of the most recent releases (after the band altered its style, basically shunned Prog-Rock in favor of  pseudo-Alternate/Retro-Rock crap/nonsense) leaves a lot to be desired. Sadly, Pain of Salvation has lost me as a devoted fan, and only until the group returns to the Prog-Rock fold will I ever again automatically purchase any new album the band issues. A sad situation, a great band gone horribly awry, in my opinion…

Why this German band is not more popular within the Prog-Metal community is a mystery to me. The material is much better than many other groups in the same genre, and the vocalist is not only instantly recognizable, but also has a good ear for melody. Generally speaking, the band is not so far afield from other class acts such as Threshold, Section 16, Spheric Universe Experiment, Vanishing Point, Empty Tremor, Silent Voices, Dali’s Dilemma, etc. All of the albums are quite enjoyable, offering high-quality music with impressive musicianship.

Présence

Seems to me almost a French version of bands such as City Boy, Ambrosia, 10cc, or other Art Rock groups mixed with Progressive Pop melodies and song arrangements. The vocals are quite pleasant, somewhat ambitious with multi-part harmonies galore ala a tamer version of Queen (or City Boy, as stated above), and the instrumentation is occasionally quirky, deceptively intricate in places. Add a touch of blues rock and jazz to a few tracks, and once again, I’m reminded of the aforementioned Art Rock groups that spiced things up with numerous genre influences. Had this band experimented a bit more, perhaps with lengthier song structures or scoring, and also flaunted their vocal strengths to a greater degree, they might have developed into a top-class Prog-Rock act.

Overall, this was a splendid surprise, since I expected only average material, but came to be rewarded with something a tad different from the norm, a precursor to the Art Rock bands mentioned earlier.

Although generally labeled as Progressive Rock on music-related websites, I find this band closer to Progressive Metal on occasion, especially the debut album, where the powerful music seems more akin to Heavy Prog acts such as Uriah Heep. Additionally, the heavy use of vintage keyboards gives this band a wonderful “retro” style/sound.
