Easily one of the most famous and successful all-girl groups in history. When Vixen burst onto the scene in the late ’80s, amidst the b’zillions of other “hair bands” heavily rotated on MTV, the band got the attention it deserved because of the talent, great looks, and especially the “gender” uniqueness. Vixen may have looked like Poison, but the band were in fact all girls and could kick Poison’s wimpy asses! Granted, the music on the first two albums contained highly polished (some would say “overly produced”) catchy Hard Rock with a touch of AOR, nothing innovative for the era, but the girls showed they could really play their instruments as well as any all-guy “hair band,” and considering many of those lackluster bands, the gals in Vixen could play much better! Janet Gardner’s spot-on vocals and the band’s many harmonies also proved quite powerful and, again, gave the group another plus over its contemporaries.

Too bad the classic lineup that appeared on these albums fell apart shortly thereafter and the band disappeared for years until a new lineup released another album in the late ’90s. Although I have not heard the full album, just a few tracks, it’s a grungy unmelodic style that sounds absolutely nothing like the classic band (and I could barely recognize the voice of Janet Gardner, since she’s singing in a lower register and somehow lacks the previous “specialness” of her voice). Not a surprise the album is “out there,” considering that Jan Kuehnemund on guitar and Share Pederson on bass were gone and, frankly, they were the members that made the big difference, giving the band the “classic sound” that lent Vixen a taste of fame (albeit briefly).

Regardless, the band’s two classic albums are still enjoyable and worth a listen.

Highly atmospheric and well-produced Prog-Rock with a touch of Metal from Votum, a Polish group that has released four fascinating albums since 2008. On several of its albums, the group plays rather laid-back yet rich and melodic symphonic music in a vein similar in many ways to groups such as Porcupine Tree, Moonrise, or Sylvan, and with a powerful and highly emotive vocalist who exhibits the perfect amount of drama on each track in order to draw the listener into the moody, occasionally ethereal sound-picture.
