So hate me, but I adore Faith Hill.  The woman is not only gorgeous, but has a voice much better suited for Blues than Country Rock (in my opinion). I feel that if she ever pursues more of the Blues/Rock material such as “Free” and “One” from the fairly decent Cry album, she could kick some serious butt outside of Nashville.

– Internal Exile (1991) 4.00 stars
– 13th Star (2007) 3.00 stars

As much as I loved Fish’s work in Marillion, I find much of his solo material uninspiring, not even close to the same style of early Marillion Prog-Rock. His debut solo effort, Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors, covered some similar styles as Marillion, but it still wasn’t quite what I was praying for. The few subsequent albums I’ve heard also did nothing much for me overall, which is why I don’t own more. It was simply the case that Fish and Marillion combined had a certain magic that neither singer nor band could create on their own. Too bad.

Flaming Row

– Elinoire (2011) 4.00 stars
– Mirage – A Portrayal of Figures (2014) 4.50 stars

This is an interesting band. The music is a bit hard to shove into a single category. Sometimes the band sounds Metal, sometimes Progressive Rock, sometimes Rock-Opera, even some Country(!)…regardless, it’s an interesting combination. The band uses a combination of male and female vocals (the latter supplied by Kiri Geile), and uses them to great advantage, especially on songs such as “Initiation Fugato” from the debut album, Elinoire, which delves liberally into Gentle Giant territory with its intricate vocal arrangements. This is one band to watch!

– Ship of Memories (1976) 4.00 stars

Like many people I’m sure, Focus first came to my attention with the wickedly wild and yodeling-fun single “Hocus Pocus.” Although I loved the humorous song and thought this band from the Netherlands quite bizarre, I didn’t check out the band’s full albums until several years later. Then I discovered some truly inspired Symphonic Prog-Rock, especially on the albums Moving Waves, Focus 3, and (perhaps my favorite Focus album) Hamburger Concerto. I adored the work of guitarist Jan Akkerman, and Thijs van Leer’s talent on keyboards and flute proved equally commendable. For this trio of albums, Focus had created a perfect balance (for me) of Rock, Classical, and Jazz, with even a bit of Medieval influences thrown into the mix. These albums also had a nice balance of mellow, acoustic tracks and some bombastic, rollicking tracks. Some of the group’s other albums occasionally hit the same heights, but I always felt them somehow lacking, even boring in places. Therefore, I strongly encourage lovers of Symphonic Prog-Rock—especially fans of groups such as Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and Jethro Tull—to investigate the trio of albums I mentioned if you haven’t done so already.

From what I understand, Frogg Café started as a Zappa tribute act known as Lumpy Gravy, and it shows. The band plays in a style quite similar to that found on Zappa’s Hot Rats and Waka/Jawaka albums, jazzy and loaded with complicated arrangements, including horns and violin. I find much of the band’s output hit or miss, however, preferring the Creatures and Fortunate Observer Of Time albums, where the band is more Progressive Rock as opposed to top-heavy Brass/Jazz-Rock. Nevertheless, most of the albums are generally above average, so for any fans of the period of Zappa’s career where he included brass in his song arrangements, this is probably a band you will appreciate.

Although typically labeled Progressive Rock, the band’s debut album (to me) is closer to Prog-Metal.  Therefore, fans of the genre should be aware that this album often straddles the line between Prog-Rock and Prog-Metal and may not be as appealing (considered too light) for some folks.

Frozen

– 3 (2011) 4.00 stars

Although this band is labeled as “Death Metal” on several music-related websites, I didn’t hear much of that on the one album I own, which to me is Prog-Metal instead.

Frumpy

– All Will Be Changed (1970) 3.50 stars
– 2 (1971) 3.00 stars
– By the Way (1972) 3.50 stars

In many ways, Frumpy reminds me of the U.K. band Babe Ruth. Both came onto the music scene at just about the same time, both bands have gruff-sounding female vocalists, and both bands have styles that are a cross between Hard Rock with Progressive Rock leanings. And both bands, as they released more and more albums, seemed to stray from their original Progressive Rock leanings to become more straightforward Hard Rock bands. Therefore, for Prog-Rock fans, beware of that fact when delving into their catalogues of releases. The earlier the release, the more Progressive Rock-related the offering. But also note, neither act were in the vein of Neo-Prog or Symphonic Prog, but rather Hard Rock with only Progressive tendencies.
