Although this band has characteristics of Gothic/Symphonic Metal similar to After Forever and Nightwish, they are probably closer to Progressive Metal instead, with the traits of bands such as Dream Theater and Spheric Universe Experience in abundance. The singer, Beatriz Albert, has operatic qualities on a few tracks, but she sings mostly in a Metal style (indeed, she can truly belt out some fierce notes). The addition of a few male vocals (including gruff thrash singing) sets the band apart even more. Interesting!

Many people liken Echolyn to a modern-day Gentle Giant. Sure, I do hear the occasional GG influences sprinkled throughout the early releases, but I wouldn’t tag the band as a clone, especially when it comes to any of the newer material. Indeed, not even close. Echolyn has developed a sound all its own and the GG influences are minimal at best when it comes to earlier albums, and as I mentioned, almost non-existent on any of the newer offerings. Regardless, the 2002 release Mei (running time nearly 50 minutes) is probably one of the best “one-song-albums” I have ever heard. An EPIC for certain.

Although there is some “hit or miss” material within its catalogue, Edenbridge plays fairly consistent and majestic Prog-Metal, often inspiring with Sabine Edelsbacher as the vocalist. She has appeared as a “special guest vocalist” on numerous albums outside the band, and with good reason…she’s damned talented, with a voice that has a unique tone! Generally, impressive and high-quality.

In Epica, the vocalist, Simone Simons, shines on all of the releases, and the band’s Gothic/Symphonic-Metal style is generally entertaining. The musicians are all excellent, and the grand arrangements and sometimes-complex instrumentation is commendable. But in truth, I have one major complaint about this band, and that is the continual use of demonic/growling male vocals (if you can even call them “vocals” as opposed to “noise”), which annoys the hell out of me. Of course, other bands such as After Forever and Nightwish use the “beauty/beast” vocal pairing on occasion, but never to the extreme. In Epica, those “beast” vocals are usually irritating, ruining just about every track on which they appear (which is way too many), and usually keep me from rating the albums even higher or listening to them more often. Still, Simon’s vocals are worth that irritation, but I have to be in just the right mood.
