Sass Jordan is one of the best female Rock singers, in my opinion, who is most inspired by (and has the capabilities of being another) Janis Joplin.  Sass, from Canada,  debuted as more of a lightweight pop singer, yet her subsequent albums dramatically shifted direction, first on Racine (with her taking on a more Rod-Stewart Blues-Rock approach), then on Rats (with a slamming disregard for current convention and her taking on a full Grunge-Rock and dirty, “damaged” and “ugly”—the last two words actually being song titles—vocalist approach).  Sass was a “Janis” for the ’90s, and even now with her new group S.U.N., she remains a powerful force.

First-class Prog-Metal from Denmark, especially with guitarist Torben Enevoldsen at the helm. This guy is an undiscovered talent, and the three albums this band released from 2003-2010 are each terrific slices of Prog-Metal. Great instrumentalists, great vocalist, great songwriting, great production…you name it. I’m shocked Section A never got the recognition it truly deserved and I still pray the band is lurking somewhere in a darkened studio creating more magic, just waiting to unleash a new collection of songs on the unsuspecting public.

I miss this band, highly Progressive with some outrageously complex arrangements and instrumentation yet usually heavy enough (especially when it comes to guitar tones) to fall into the Metal category. After the sad and untimely death of singer Mike Baker, the band seemingly disappeared, or at least has released no new material since 2009 (without Baker at the helm). The albums Carved In Stone and Tyranny remain two of my favorite Prog-Metal albums and I, for one, would welcome new material from the band (even though I would still miss Mike Baker’s recognizable voice).

After leaving the excellent Angra, vocalist Andre Matos, bassist Luis Mariutti, and drummer Ricardo Confessori formed Shaman, and the band’s debut release, Ritual, proved to be a real scorcher. Like Angra, Shaman delivered sophisticated and hard-driving Prog-Metal with the occasional Brazilian flavor, with Matos’s melodic vocals being a jaw-dropping highlight, and Ritual remains my favorite of the band’s four releases (the latter two featuring a different yet equally capable vocalist after Matos left the group in 2006 to go solo).

Like Faith Hill, I also have a fondness for Shania Twain, and for the same exact reasons. Not only is she beautiful, a sight to behold when seeing her in concert, but despite her material that may or may not appeal to the average listener, it’s hard to argue that her crystal clear, powerful, and emotional voice is anything but off-putting. This woman knows a damned catchy melody when it smacks her in the face, and her output and eventual success proves it. I’m not a huge fan of Country or Country-Rock, but Shania converted me to “at least” listen before passing judgment. Her Up and Come On Over albums are two of the catchiest collections of songs to have appeared in many years, and she deserves credit for that alone, especially since her vocal performances on each release are so damned memorable.

This terrific Progressive Rock band has been together since the 1980s. The single album from 1984 is unfamiliar to me, whereas in the 1990s Solstice returned with a different vocalist, Heidi Kemp, and I’m a true fan of her work with this band. The music is on the mellower side of Prog-Rock—similar to Magenta, Flamborough Head, Curved Air, etc.—and quite melodic overall. Also note, Clive Bunker, former Jethro Tull drummer, was once a member of this band as well.

Here’s a band from Italy I discovered only recently that includes a terrific female singer. Claudia Barsi has a strong, clean voice, which fits perfectly with the Power Metal and Progressive Metal style of the band. She has a wide range and delivers her melodic vocals in both English and the occasional Italian. She’s also of the “non-operatic” school, so there’s not yet another “Nightwish/Without Temptation/etc.” clone here, thankfully. This band shows a great deal of promise.

This is one group I discovered in the late-’90s, but it sadly disbanded after only three stunning studio albums. In many respects—the high level of musicianship, the complex song arrangements, the general creativity—I felt Superior to be Germany’s answer to Dream Theater, yet for the most part, the band’s sound is even more “metal” than DT could ever be. Regardless, Superior is sorely missed, especially due to the (and please forgive the pun) superior quality of the band’s three albums compared to thousands of other releases from the same era.
