A better-than-average AOR/Hard Rock band featuring a terrific female singer by the name of Sue Willetts. Both her wide range and powerful delivery bring to mind singers such as Holly Woods (Toronto), Debbie Davis (Witness), Sandi Sayara (Saraya) and a host of other female-led bands of a similar style. The band plays ultra-catchy material and had (has) the potential to be a huge. Too bad the band has yet to make a bigger impact on the industry.

An energetic Prog-Metal band from Italy that, from 2001-2007, featured one of the finest (and busiest) singers in the genre, Titta Tani (Astra/Empty Tremor/Ashent/etc). Dreamland is the first DGM album on which he appeared (the band’s third release overall), and the music is a complex, driving form of Prog/Power Metal that fits nicely into the style of music often played by groups such as Stratovarius, Elegy, Symphony X, and Labyrinth to name but a few.  Even though the band now has a new vocalist, DGM continues to deliver some rollicking, high-quality material.

This talented Prog-Metal band from Israel blew me away when I heard the debut album Utopia several years ago. In many respects, the group reminds me of Haken, another “newer” group with tons of potential. I’m hoping Distorted Harmony continues to release material for many years to come.

DragonForce

– Ultra Beatdown (2008) 2.50 stars

A Power-Metal band with some Progressive-Metal elements. Just not for me. The “mile a minute” rhythms appear almost continuously on all the tracks (which are all 5-7 minutes), and I do mean ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY, and the guitar-shredding gets really annoying after a while, meaning the band is extremely boring to me since everything sounds nearly exactly the same throughout just about every single track. Way too little variety.

Dream Theater is probably the ultimate “granddaddy” of all Progressive Metal bands that inspired a high percentage of acts within the same genre, and by which every other group within the genre is often compared whether it deserves the comparison or not. Face it, Dream Theater is to Prog-Metal what the band Genesis is to Prog-Rock.

I loved the band when it first appeared on the scene in the 1990s, and still enjoy most of its releases. I have, however, grown less enchanted with the band through the years, and it’s likely because Dream Theater (in my mind) has overstayed its welcome a bit. Sure, the releases are always high quality, but the band no longer inspires me as it once did. Perhaps because I seem to have heard it all before. Seriously, the band probably has the longest list of bootleg albums (authorized or not) that I’ve ever seen, so suffers from overexposure. And James Labrie’s voice (although good) feels so “samey” nowadays, whether with Dream Theater or outside the band on his many side projects or during his frequent “guest appearances.” Again, overexposure abounds with this band, making anything new “less special.”

Still, the group deserves the respect of every single fan of the genre since, without Dream Theater, the genre might not have exploded onto the music scene when it did and, in turn, inspired so many thousands of bands.
