Galadriel

– Chasing the Dragonfly (1992) 4.00 stars
– Mindscapers (1997) 4.00 stars

Although I have only two releases by this Spanish group (the two albums released in the 1990s before the band disappeared for nearly 11 years), I feel that much of the material reminds me of a marriage between a band such as IQ (for the music) and Yes (for the vocals). Somewhat dreamy, somewhat atmospheric, the instrumentation is often hypnotic yet not uncomplicated, with mood shifts galore and, especially with the Jon Anderson-inspired vocals, highly melodic. I have yet to hear the final release (from 2008) but it has mixed reviews and a lower-than-average score on music-related websites, so I’m unsure if Galadriel altered its style from what it delivered back in the ’90s or if something else went wrong with the album. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to hear it and judge for myself. Meanwhile, I’ll simply continue to enjoy the two albums I have in my collection.

Galahad

– Nothing Is Written (1991) 3.50 stars

– Battle Scars (2012) 4.00 stars
– Beyond the Realms of Euphoria (2012) 4.50 stars
– Quiet Storms (2017) NOT RATED

Another Neo-Prog band from the U.K. that I’ve grown to love quite a bit. Galahad started out back in the early 1990s as sort of a Marillion/IQ/Pallas clone (enjoyable enough, but hardly unique), but throughout the many years the band has been releasing material Galahad introduced other influences into the overall sound and eventually developed its own style, its own “voice.” The albums are all “must haves” for me, with several of them (Empires Never Last, Battle Scars, and Beyond The Realms Of Euphoria in particular) being near masterpieces. Neo-Prog fans will most likely fall in love.

– Nightmare at Maple Cross (1986) 3.50 stars
– Take a Bite (1988) 3.50 stars
– Girlschool (1992) 3.50 stars

Probably the most famous of the Hard-Rock all-female bands in history. Girlschool started as a no-frills, kick-butt type of band during the “New Wave Of British Heavy Metal” era, with a tight connection to the band Motorhead, but eventually branched out into more melodic material, although not forfeiting all of its previous edge. Many consider the first two albums to be the best, but I actually prefer Girlschool’s approach on Screaming Blue Murder, Play Dirty, and (especially) Running Wild (when the group added a dedicated and terrific lead vocalist named Jackie Bodimead for the latter). On the Running Wild album, the band actually brought to mind my favorite female-led band, Tantrum, when it came to the harmonies. But regardless of which era of Girlschool rock fans prefer, each is commendable and enjoyable, and the band should be given credit for taking the “all-female” rock band genre to a bar that in my opinion was surpassed (at least for a short time) by only Vixen before that band fell apart.

Fans of Yes who demand more Prog-Rock in a similar style would likely not be disappointed by most of the Glass Hammer albums, especially If, Cor Cordium, and Perilous. Not a shock, considering the band’s vocalist on those albums, Jon Davison, was also a member of Yes. Even the band’s earlier albums are quite good, and also heavily influenced by Yes, so Glass Hammer is near the top of my list of all-time fave Prog-Rock bands.

Quite similar to Asia (seeing as how John Payne is the vocalist here), but a bit more Progressive than Asia. Nevertheless, this is more of a cross between AOR and Prog-Rock than a pure Progressive Rock band. I much prefer GPS’s sole album over anything Asia produced.

A legend!  Her contributions to Jefferson Airplane/Starship are generally stellar, while her solo efforts (especially on the hard-rocking album Welcome to the Wrecking Ball and the lighter Dreams) show her true ass-slamming capabilities. She was an inspiration to all female singers coming after her, most assuredly, so that alone gives her major legitimacy.

This is one bizarre band, meaning it offers such a mishmash of styles and sounds, you never quite know what you’ll be getting. Although the band is usually labeled Stoner Rock or Stoner Metal, this group from the Russian Federation occasionally incorporates so much more into its overall sound—Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Space Rock, even a touch of Jazz Rock and Punk sprinkled throughout. Imagine a cross between early Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, Pink Floyd, and Van Der Graff Generator with some demented Jethro Tull tossed into the mix for good measure and that might give you an idea of what this band has to offer on several releases. I discovered The Grand Astoria only recently and will be delving into its back catalogue (quite vast by the looks of it) as soon as possible to see exactly what it’s all about. (A warning—a fair amount of reviewers seem to air complaints about the lead vocals, but thus far I’ve heard nothing too awful in that department. We shall see if the criticism is justified in earlier works.)
