One of my all-time favorite bands. Although the titles of the albums as well as the fantasy-styled album covers suggest a greater emphasis on Prog-Rock, the band’s music is, in actuality, a seamless blend of AOR and Hard Rock with some Prog-Rock touches. Still, all of Magnum’s albums have at least a few tracks where the Prog-Rock genre really comes to the fore. Probably one of the classiest and most consistent bands in history.

I was never too keen on The Moody Blues. The band went through various styles through the years and none of them struck me as anything other than passable background music. Ironically enough, however, I think “Nights In White Satin” is probably one of the best songs in Rock History. Nevertheless, the band never excited me too much. I also felt adding Patrick Moraz as the keyboardist was a true waste of his talent since he was never given anything in which to shine (unlike his fantastic soloing in Yes.)

I feel this band is quite inconsistent, producing some great stuff and some rather boring and horrible material through the years. When the band is good, it’s very good…when it’s poor, however…yawn. Buyer beware.

In general, the music included on these two albums—highly symphonic Prog Rock—is fairly decent, although many of the synth sounds border on “cheesy.” Additionally, the lead vocals are borderline off-key and extremely weak, often buried in the mix (perhaps that’s a good thing). Moreover, I’m not sure if it’s because the vocalist has a thick Japanese accent, but I also can’t understand any of the lyrics, which I am supposing are in English, due to the song titles. Therefore, in my opinion, the performances and execution of the material are not quite up to par.
